Tibor Dessewffy is a sociologist, working at the ELTE
Institute of Sociology. He obtained his M.A. degrees at the same university:
in 1989 from the Law School, and a year later from the Institute of Sociology.
He has given lectures at numerous conferences and undertook several short
research trips. He received his PhD from the University of Amsterdam in
1997. He was a visiting fellow at Boston University and the New School
for Social Research. He is a member of the board of the ELTE-UNESCO Ethnic
and Minority Studies Department, the editorial board of the European
Journal of Cultural Studies, and a fellow of the 21th Century Fund.
Dr. Dessewffy is director of the Hungarian section of the World Internet
Project, initiated by UCLA. Besides his scholarly activities Dr. Dessewffy
is widely known through his publications in various newspapers. Among others,
he regularly writes for the biggest Hungarian daily (Népszabadság)
and weekly (HVG). He used to be the media-consultant of the most
popular Hungarian commercial television. Apart from his numerous appearances
in different programs he hosts an intellectual talk show, Scientists' Club
on the Hungarian National Television. He is also an advisor of the National
Radio and Television Organisation Public Service Committee. His main fields
of interest are media, theories informational societies, cultural effects
of technological development and the sociology of knowledge of everyday
life. |
